Mormon Lookout to Sawmill Hill 6/01/2007
We have done a bunch of riding at Gooseberry Springs and as far East as Kinnickinick Lake. I think we have almost coved this area. On the last picture on the last page, you can see this strange soil over sand situation. When I studied the maps, I determined that there was no friendly access to this area above this formation. There may be other formations up in the forest above it. Seems like a good place to explore. I heard about Sawmill Hill, I guess it had a Sawmill? So now I have 2 targets to explore + whatever other side trails we find.

I don’t have time to keep taking pictures of these flowers. They look like lilies and they are everywhere. There were other types of flowers blooming but these lily things where the most notable.

(If I didn’t plant them they are weeds LOL)
As we continue on our adventure we enter probably the most out of the way and remote area possible. It wasn’t that the roads were that bad. It was more studying the map and following the terrain. I guess the roads would also be prohibitive to most 2 WD trucks and maybe not fun enough for most 4 WD vehicles. We went down into an isolated area and the size of the trees and the density of the forest increased dramatically. I guess it had to do with the environment caused by the north-east exposure. We were stopping to take a good rest and have a few snacks. It was so quiet that you could hear small animals rustling at a good distance. ,,,, Then we heard footsteps! ,,,,, A few minutes later this guy and his son appear and told us, in 15 years we are the 1st people they have ever seen in this area.

Well I guess it is isolated !
After working over this isolated forest area we popped out on this great road. You know sometimes you just want to run faster, and this road was smooth. We headed east and finally figured out we were heading to Winslow Arizona , but the road was just so nice ! After getting a grip on our location and looking around we started to enjoy the view. Look at that picture below. If I threw in a few elephants and lions I could tell you this was Africa,,,, on the,,,, Serengeti plains ? or something. Thank goodness it was just a little overcast. This wouldn’t be a good place to ride on a real hot day with clear skies. We then headed south-west to hopefully explore Sawmill Hill.
(Below) These high plains have a beauty of their own but nothing beats the forest.
We didn’t find any Sawmill remains at Sawmill Hill but the forest and roads were spectacular. The secondary roads going to the hills were very very isolated. So far today we have see the 2 hikers and did see 1 truck on the road to Winslow. The weather was great as you can see we are dressed for that nice 70 degree weather.
Look at that picture above and guess what kind of day we had? This is sure better than sitting home or going to the mall. We are so blessed in the Western States to have all this federal land.
Respect the land. Pack out more than you packed in. If you see a hiker especially in far, always ask if they need anything. It doesn’t hurt to give them a cold water out of your cooler,,,, especially if they don’t have any left.

Get off the couch !
Yes, Connie did find her ice tea before we left.
