Turkey Mountain toWillow Valley Dam 6/15/2007
We got a good early start with some plans to do some metal detecting early, before the heat gets cranked up. We went to this old coral and gave it a whirl. 1st thing to know is I have almost no idea what I am doing, but I am learning ! This was not a good place ! It had 100 years of rusty nails and thousands of pieces of rusty wire. The metal detector would hit on rust spots in the dirt. This was BAD, but educational ! Connie had enough and just wanted to ride. I swear her ATV goes to the trees like a magnet.
The first real destination we headed for was Turkey Mountain. We unsuccessfully tried several questionable routes. It was not a total loss. We found several nice dead-end trails. Yes, Dead-End,,,, but very isolated.
We returned back to the real road for a direct route to Turkey Mountain. As we got closer the road was terrible, not dangerous, not difficult, just pounding rough for many miles. The road inclined slightly increasing in altitude. (Right) Yes, that is Turkey Mountain, it’s only a few hundred feet higher than the road.
As we crossed the mountain, LOL, the road got smooth! ,,,,,, Then it sucked, even worse than before! It just beat us to death for miles and miles, not good.
The road got nice and had many open areas with cattle. This was a nice place to ride,,, finally.
We found Willow Valley Dam ! Or it was a dam ? I have no idea. It looks like it washed out. It may have been opened up on purpose? I did some research but didn’t find any information that referred to it. My map shows a lake?
Judging by the rock field I would think it was a dam blow out. Sure looks smaller in the pictures that it did in real life.
Overlooking the dam was a great place for lunch. Many of the roads were way too good for an ATV. I guess you just can’t make me happy.
Conclusion: My God the roads were irritating. If you want to hide a body Turkey Mountain is the place ! If you are 18 and want to run naked with your girlfriend this is the place. Only highly motivated people should attempt Turkey Mountain, it will beat you into submission. No matter what, it was still better than sitting home !
