Everyone goes to Woods Canyon Lake. I have heard people mention Chevelon Lake before but usually they are talking about something around Chevelon and not the lake itself. The other issue is the lake is in Shitsgreaves Nation Forest and all indication are they have no clue what they are doing. As you enter the area around Woods Canyon Lake they have signs that say camp only within 50 yard or the markers. Most people were very confused by their signage. Further into the forest away from Woods Canyon Lake, no one seemed to know if they could camp or not, hell I don’t know? They didn’t have a sign saying where the restricted camping ended. I wasn’t sure I could even park to unload the ATV’s so I picked a well used camping spot and parked it.
Just to get started we took the shortest route to look down in the canyon. We were very happy to see water !!!
I just don’t know why we rarely ever see anyone camping out near the edge of the canyons.
We get to the official road down to Chevelon Lake and find this “truly amazing sign”. The road is closed unless you are under 40 inches. My wife’s 200 cc Polaris cleared the posts with about an inch to spare , the Honda Recon passed easily .
The road going down to the lake was steep. It wasn’t dangerous but was about a “#3”. I wouldn’t recommended taking an in-experienced rider down but we made it fine with 2WD. It was about 1 mile from the gate down to the lake and would be a hard walk down and up.
The lake was beautiful and very isolated, as we can see you hike in or ATV in.
This is as close to an isolated mountain lake as it gets.
We seen this sign for Chevelon Crossing. It was another 10+ miles away but what the heck we’ll have a look. The roads going to it were great with no traffic. The actual road going down into the canyon was scenic with many photo opportunities.
I’m so glad we came. This was like a river valley with moving water and a great camping area. Again we were the only one in the area.
(Left) It just doesn’t get much better than this. This is a real camping area with picnic tables along the creek. (Connie wouldn’t let me go swimming) This area also has a paved access loop for those with small trailers and new restrooms. Sweet ! I have no idea about fishing here.
We seen another sign that said Chevelon Ridge and this should almost be on our way back. The road going to it was un-maintained and varied from nice to big mud holes. On the way we found this great camping area with giant rocks. I just know the grandkids would love camping here.
I’m having fun climbing on these rocks (I’ll never grow up never grow up). Between the rocks and the road is a great place to camp. I’m sold. Maybe I’ll be back without the grandkids ?
This area also has a trail that heads to the lake. This trail looks more like a trail and not a steep rock road like the other spot. I didn’t hike down but it also looks shorter for the hikes. One thing for sure, it is a treed/forest trail and looks like it would be enjoyable. Oops ! just 45 minutes until sundown. We got to get moving!
Back to Chevelon Ridge , we made it there ! The view was great without climbing down.
