Lost Salt Canyon 11/17/2007
Due to situation beyond our control we got a late start but a late start is better than no start. You can see how high the sun is. We decided to go back to the Colcord area to look at some of the side trails. (Can we find the Coati again?) About 1 in the afternoon we arrived at our staging area.
Yea yea,,, it was a late start and a long drive but just a few minutes on forest roads like this and we forgot all about it.
Our target area was the Lost Salt Canyon. It was obvious that only ATVs and 2 wheelers could get in here due to road conditions. I love these old corals I wish I could date then somehow. If they could only talk.
The entrance to the canyon is easily hike-able. (Left) As you can see someone went down with an ATV and had to build little stone ramps to come back up. LOL Some places are just better hiked.
This would be a great place to easily hike down the canyon. Warning: judging by the angle down I’ll bet the water "hauls ass" if it flows at all , even a little. This may be a great spot to catch the action with a camera ?
Looking down the Creek almost looks like a rock fall, it is just an illusion. It actually is like steps but the view only shows the miscellaneous rocks sitting on top of the high spots. Looking immediately to the up-creek side you have a better feel for what the creek bed looks like.
This isn’t far from my Coati sighting and it sure looks like great Bear country to me. The roads in this area aren’t bad at all for an ATV just a lot of obstacles to drive around and it would be far too narrow for a pickup truck. I guess this is about perfect.
With our late start it is getting late in the day. We have about 2 hours until dark. We head back the long way so the wife can get a look at Colcord Lookout. The last time I was here I got a really band picture of the tower so I can retake that one. We got back to the forest road system and off these secondary trails. As you can see these roads are virtually unused.
Here is a better picture of Colcord Lookout tower. And some of the almost unused roads around it. SWEET !
At one spot the devastation from the fire. The other side of the road is just thick forest.
As the sun was almost down we were in safe distance to our truck. A quick stop at a friend’s cabin and we lost our sunlight. It’s a good thing I marked the location of the truck with the GPS. We were fairly safe being on the major forest roads and not down some trail. The temperature really dropped as the sun went down.

This was a great day,,, a short day,,,, still better than sitting on the couch !
Loading in the dark,,,, again.
