Ride 103 ATV Adventure Page 32
Double Cabin and Alcatraz Point 5/29/08
I’m not sure if it is hard to tell, but I am running out of places to go. After studying the map, I saw a small spot of uncharted territory that I have not run on. Yes, I was west of this area and east of this area but not exactly there. If this works out OK, I will be able to climb Promontory Lookout Tower (a past goal). The loop will go past O’Haco Lookout (Maybe climb 2 tower in 1 day!), a look at Double Cabin and see what gives with Alcatraz Point. I have never heard anyone mention O’Haco Lookout or Alcatraz Point, sound like my kind of place!

I’m against anyone telling me where to camp. This is a disbursed camping area I parked in ,,,MMMmmm . Guess what ? They have numbered stakes and you have to camp within 50 feet of the stake. All the stakes are about 100 yards apart and each spot is pretty nice. This means no one can slide in next to you and crowd you out ,,,,,SWEET ! I think ?
(Above) Promontory Lookout was closed, I guess it is too early in the season. We found this sweet camping spot on the edge of the Rim. Great, but very windy. (Below)Anyone that has never driven the Rim Road #300 is missing something. It is full of spectacular views and wonderful places to stop and enjoy the scenery. 4wd not required, any car will do.
O’Haco Lookout is an entire compound, big water tank, cabin, basketball hoop, picnic table and a nice lookout tower. The fence was locked like Promontory Lookout, too early in the year.

Our next stop was an area called Double Cabin ? We only found 1 cabin. LOL . This is a really nice area to camp/picnic at. This area seems really isolated but easy to ATV into no matter how you came. A man with a 4wd truck and small camper would be in heaven here. I can check this off one list and add it to another.
From Double Cabin we traveled N-W to a place called Alcatraz Point. I think we could call the roads leading to it “less traveled”. I don’t think we are going to find any Class A motor-homes in here.
(Left)-The Point
Alcatraz point is not the golden ring we were looking for but it was a pretty nice place to get away to. It overlooks a shallow canyon that doesn’t really provide a spectacular view but does provide limited access and privacy. This could be a great place to do some primitive camping and possibly not see anyone for a week.

This is one of the most scenic areas on the Rim, "McGuire Crossing". I was here on a past trip but it was still worth the effort to ride it again. Some day I hope to come and just walk the creek down a few miles. The canyon is lined with giant stands of Ponderosa Pines.
As long as we are here I guess we are obliged to ride past Bear Canyon Lake, Bla Bla Bla , so we did.
It’s not that I don’t like the lake, it is that everyone goes to the lake. We found some sweet trails just a few miles away from Bear Canyon to the west.
Many of these (numbered) roads went through very thickly forested areas. The most enjoyable roads (left) popped in and out of clearings and traversed the hillsides.
We did this ride on a Thursday. I make no promises to how crowded it will be in the summer on a weekend. for the most part we seem almost no one today. And I loved it !
Not sure if I made a mistake yet, but we got a new side-loader trailer. The idea is to carry 2 ATV’s on the trailer then we can take the SUV and possibly camp overnight. Logistically I’m not sure this will all work out, but I’ll see.
