Dupont Cabin 01/09/2009
We all know how I feel about this if you read my adventures up to here. Here I am with no one to ride with on my Friday off. I studied the maps and looked at some of my notes and discovered that I had never been to Dupont Cabin. After mapping it out I discovered that it was not going to be a terrible long ride. I really don’t have any information on it, I just heard the name a few times.
To do the cabin a great staging area is the usual one we use east of Punkin Center. Instead of heading to Young, AZ just take the road to the right. This ride has many smooth roads with some pretty nice scenery. It doesn’t have to be a riding challenge just a safe ride for me all alone.
Yeah ,,, I know the road is just too smooth for an ATV but the scenery was great. Some of the smaller formations were very interesting and different around every corner.
I have no idea what caused this color. It almost looks florescent green, like it is moss or algae. It was on the north face ????
It was obvious that I was slowly climbing in altitude and at some point the road turned more to a trail.
Many of the formations that I was looking up at I am now looking over to. It was interesting to see these almost flat plateau areas, not common in other areas. A good hunting area maybe ????
We are climbing now ! Great view and the road is much steeper but safe steep, not a problem.
We finally popped out on top in the forest. It was obvious that no one has been here in a while. Many places had snow on the trail and no tracks through it. It didn’t feel that cold but all of the puddles had a layer of ice on then.
Not any great distance into the woods was the cabin. SWEET,,, even has covered ATV parking. I don’t know the history of the cabin but it has roots that go back more than a few years.
This place would do in a pinch but judging by the rodent droppings (POOP) you would not really be alone. Other hikers/campers have left some emergency supplies, (that can of pork and beans sure looks good)
This could be a nice place to ride a horse to. The corral looks to be in good shape. I made an effort to continue north to meet up with the other road that runs east/west north of here. After looking at the time and expected sundown as indicated on the GPS, and the condition of the trail, and being alone, I thought it prudent to just take the safe (wimpy) way back.
Just as an added note; This area was full of cat tracks, big ones, small ones, and tiny ones. I usually don’t do it but this was a “1 in the pipe and hammer back time”. I was back early but had lots of side roads to amuse myself with.
It was all OK.
