Queen Valley (CCW Loop) 3/6/2009
We are not big on that desert riding, we prefer the forest. As we all know the weather has been goofy and the forest is closed and still has snow in many places. We decided that as long as we are trapped to desert riding we might as well go to the best spots we know of. Queen valley is high in our rating of scenic places to visit. This time we will repeat much of the path we took last time except in reverse order and with some new places that we missed last time.
Within minutes we found this old RR bridge. I suspect it had more to do with the mines than commercial RR.
Some of our alternate route went on the old road that was the creek. It had just enough water to make it fun but not even close to being a problem.
Here it is “The Cabin ?” I don’t know if it has an official name. Last time I saw it from a distance. This time it was a priority to see it up close.
A quick look around the area yielded the remains of some other stone buildings and a mine. As usual when exploring these areas “PAY ATTENTION” here is an open well with an opening just big enough for a small adult or child to fall in.
From the cabin it was a steep switchback road up the mountain. Like last time we had terrific views.
It was hazy if you look too far in the distance but still awesome views.
Caution, sensory overload area ahead ! Pay attention, drive slow, stop to take pictures and just enjoy it. For those with a real fear of heights,,,, this may not be the place for you. It’s not dangerous and no reason to get hurt, it's just breathtaking.
I just didn’t know what to photograph next and now I can’t decide what photo to show you.
If you haven’t guessed it this ride covers many large transitions in altitude. At specific altitudes there are flowers and lots of them. I suppose in a few weeks they will be blooming at a different altitude.
Nice roads that just go and go over the next mountain range.
If Montana is “Big Sky Country” then Arizona is “Big Mountain Country” The photo just doesn’t do justice to the actual view. Again it was hard picking the photo to show you.
End
Queen Valley is just a short drive east of the valley. 4-WD truck or ATV strongly recommended for just a few spots. ATV difficulty is about a #2 but caution to anyone with a fear of heights. Height problems are worse with a CW loop. The CCW loop takes you up the steepest parts rather than looking down. Desert riding sucks,,, but this is one of the few good ones.
Not just good, this is the Queen ! Bring your camera.
