Apache Maid Mountain (Back Side Loop) 8/8/2009
We have been here before. Looking at the map it appears that we could circumnavigate the mountain . Usually everyone just goes south of Stoneman Lake then west to the mountain. We decided we would even approach this ride from I-17 navigate to the north side of the mountain, head west, then south. I’m sure someone else has done this ???? just never heard of it.
Most of the northern and western side of the mountain is scrubby prairie try terrain. I do see some great spots to hunt coyote and basically, anything that would graze or take advantage of this situation.
When the forest goes from scrub to thick it’s like a distinct line. You go from out in the sun to heavy shade. This transition happens about the southern most edge of the mountain and continues to the east side.
The road going from the southern edge of the mountain to the lookout tower has great views. Yes, I have it zoomed up X10 but that is still an incredible view of Sedona even with the naked eye.
The tower is very short but has a great location. I hope that is a controlled burn ?
Off in the distance I can just make out the old ranch house. This is great! I can plan a new route from here to go revisit that site. Also at the tower site is a picnic table and rest rooms. This was a great place to stop for lunch.
Yes, it is still in tack, little has changed. I don’t think the wife is ready to move in yet. LOL
This place was a real beauty at one time. Even had some indoor pluming. I remember linoleum like that,,, 50’s ??? and nice chandelier in the parlor .
This area is full of some great little side roads and nice forest trails. It’s hard to get lost when you can always look up and see the mountain.
This is a great place to enjoy the forest. Just below flagstaff the temperatures are great in the summer. The winter months can be very cold , spring and fall are perfect for me. On this ride and other in the area we have seen a variety of wildlife. Most of the trails are fairly flat so it’s a great place to bring the kids, family, or other less experienced riders. This area has easy access and no problem finding a place to park even the biggest trailer.

Stoneman Lake, don’t bring your fishing gear, the lake is dry
Take care of our forest. It doesn’t hurt to stop and pick up a can or other litter. You may have accidently dropped something yourself !
