Buckhorn Ranch / HD Draw 10/16/2009
Well it’s almost that season that makes it too darn cold to go north but "almost" means we can still do it. After studying the map again we decided we really like that are off of Lake Mary road by the Poor Farm. I think we have worked this are out, but have never been really really west. On the map we see this ranch and a canyon that no one has ever mentioned. Looking on Google Earth we see what’s left of the trail and some structures
It’s going to be a good ride just to get to the area we want to explore. We pass some familiar sites like the old pump house.
How nice, a large section of forest still in it’s fall colors, a pleasant surprise.
We finally get over to the area to start exploring new territory. Oh MY,,, are these trail/roads bad. It’s not that we can’t make it through,,, it’s just rough and slow. It beat use for hours.
OK, Here is the canyon we seen on the map. This is still a ways off but we have hope of making it.
Finally we made it to the ranch house, looks like it has been many years since this place was used.
This was what we were after. We found the start of the canyon. You could just walk down the gradual slope into the canyon.
In a few places the canyon floor looked like steps. It’s too late in the day to investigate further.
I guess I would have to say that this is a very isolated area. It doesn’t look like it but this trail was fairly steep, but the canyon view made it worth it.
The time was slipping away ? It was time to go back but how do we go? The same way we came or continue the loop? We both decided that anything was better than rocks and boulders. Our choice was also rough and not really wide enough for a jeep or truck (that you like). I guess it was better and it was shorter. We were very happy to get back to real roads, and we made it to our safe area before it was dark.
It’s nice when you are back in the safe envelope. It’s extra nice late in the day when the trees are in their fall colors with smooth roads a nice cool breeze,,,, and no one around for miles.

We loaded at dark,,, perfect !
