Punkin Center East (tour) Part 1 of 2, 1/2/2010
My plan was to take Glenn on a tour of ZT cabin, ride over to the cave, come back through Dupont cabin, one big (almost) loop. As thing progressed we did have a bit of a late start, but headed out anyway knowing that we could cut it short if we needed to.
The ride up is always scenic if you just stop and enjoy it a bit. Glenn has never been here before so the camera is a clicking away. (More picture of this area are available at my other rides to this area)
The top of the hill is dense forest. The temperature was reasonably cold (it is January). Some of the mud holes were froze and some were slushy ,,, but fun.
ZT cabin was just like we left it a few years ago, actually cleaned up a bit !
Looks like a great place for lunch and yes, it is much colder than it looks.
Our next goal was to head to the cave. The road was so sticky with mud I had to stay in the lower gears. When we finally stopped for a rest it was obvious that our ATVs weighed a whole lot more due to all the mud stuck to it. The tire diameter had increased with all the mud packed on them, sure mad it feel like I was driving a Flintstone Mobile. LOL
We made it to the cave. The remaining layer of snow outside the entrance confirmed that very few people know about this place. We see No tracks human or animal (and that’s good). This cave is so big we just couldn’t get enough light to see our way. Only in the smaller entrance way could we get enough light to see and take pictures.
Looks like we will have to return here with much better lighting but we now have a real appreciation for the real size of this cave. It’s getting late in the day. We have never done the trail from here to Dupont Cabin so the safe choice is to return through the mud. This doesn’t sound like a good choice, but it is a known instead of an unknown. We have to come back to the Cave anyway so that will be the time to circle over to Dupont.
