Humboldt Mt. to New River Canyon4/16/2010
Part 1 of 2
Humboldt Mt. is the mountain with the Doppler Radar site that sites above Horseshoe Reservoir. The road going up is passable for the service trucks so it is no problem with an ATV. I am by myself so safe and easy are attributes that we will not complain about today. The road going up was scenic but the weather was very overcast and visibility was not all that good. As I climbed to over 5,000 ft even with the haze it was nice.
As usual I parked at Bronco Trailhead /horse riding area, not like I’m going to bother anyone.
I thought this mountain overlooked Bartlett Lake, but in fact it was Horseshoe Reservoir. When I got home I even matched it to the shape of the lake on the map, yes it’s Horseshoe. I never realized how big this lake was.
I Guess they don’t want me visiting.
At another microwave site at the top I spotted this ramp. No, it is not an ATV suicide ramp or a remnant for Evel Kinievel. This is a ramp they run down with their hang gliders and hope they get lift.
No matter what they say about ATVs it wouldn’t be as scary as running down this ramp onto nothing but air. Oh ,,, I don’t think so !
I explored a few of the side roads at the bottom and as usual found me a sign that I didn’t like.
That’s OK I have a lot of other roads to travel and most likely means a dead end anyway
The high level of rain this year combined with the snowfall runoff has kept the creeks full this year. The season has lasted long enough for the plants to actually grow along the normally dry creeks . I don’t know about fishing but this would be a great place to hang out even with no hook on your line.
As you may have notice our riding has slowed this year. It was a combination of weather related cancellations and other issues. It’s April and the higher forest is still closed due to snow, work schedule, real vacation schedule,,, crap. The largest problem is my wife hurt her back (NOT ATV RELATED).
