Bear Canyon Lake Crossings 6/11/2010
Researching the map we found 3 good crossings above Bear Canyon Lake. A crossing is usually a road or trail that dips down into a canyon, crosses a river or creek and comes up the other side. Our experience says these are scenic and great places to hike. We had trouble deciding where to park . The forest rules in this area are sketchy at best as to where you can park if you are not going to camp. I could just hog a camping area but why deprive someone that wants to camp. We elected to park in front of the Ranger Station at Woods Canyon Lake.
These aren’t trails, they are all roads but very few people travel these roads. I don’t think we seen anyone for hours after we got in a few miles.
This would be a great place to hike. Paralleling the creek is a very good game trail. Between the creek and the trails a person could amuse themselves for a few hours. Yes, no ATV is needed to get to this location any pickup or SUV will do, even a car.
Heading west out of the canyon it was obvious even less traffic uses this route. If 2 trucks pulling trailers met it would be a problem.
We found a nice place for lunch. The wind was blowing and the wife was freezing.
Mcguire Crossing is one of the more attractive areas. I always wanted to work this area over with a metal detector. It is one of the few almost natural crossings with some reasonable camping area for a cowboy to pitch his tent or bedroll.
The last place on the map was Turkey Crossing but guess what,,,, CLOSED. 2 out of 3 isn’t bad. Looking at the forest around here I guess it’s all honor system . That gate isn’t going to keep anyone out.
We took a quick trip to Bear Canyon Lake. Yes, it is still there but they do have the road closed that goes to the other side.
A few quick stops on the way out. We always have to look over the edge of the Rim on the way out. Who could pass up Woods Canyon Lake ?
We had a great time.
